Tips for Selection :

  • Signs of good quality cherries are fruits that are large, glossy, plump, firm and dark colored for their variety.
  • Only select cherries that have been kept cool and moist since flavor and texture both decline at warm temperatures
  • Choose cherries that still have their stem intact; stems should be fresh and green
  • Check carefully for bruises or cuts and do not purchase cherries that are sticky from juice leakage

Cherries are round shaped fruits that range from a deep mahogany red color to a bright yellow with red blush. Their flesh tends to be firm with a sweet flavor. Did you know that Broadway in New York shifts west at East 10th Street because a cherry tree once stood there? Cherries have many uses besides being eaten alone or as ice cream toppers…they can be enjoyed in a spinach salad, mixed in oatmeal, or in a delicious smoothie with yogurt and berries.
